multi

Yay new stationary for a 3-weeks-into-school-year-pick-me-up! Gotta love jetpens.
Pilot coleto (lol ignore spelling error in photo, was thinking of gelato ahaha..) so expensive e_e" It write super smoothly though, unlike my normal 0.25 Hi-Tec (guess that's the downside of super thin pens). Refill colours are apple green, clear blue, cherry pink, and apricot orange. Comparing to my current MUJI gel pens, the green and pink are darker, while blue is almost identical. Least I've got back-ups since I can't find the MUJI colours anymore.

Other two were bought just cause. Wanted to compare the two lines of gel pens, pretty similar I would say. I personally don't like clicky pens, so for that reason I would pick the Uni, but I suspect the Pilot's nib is more durable. Both again is super smooth.

In addition, slightly ironic that I picked up the new edition of Kinfolk which has the theme of "weekends". I've forgotten the meaning of that word since uni started heh.
Now to find time to actually read it (instead of my 60 page research materail for civ220 assignment...)

I feel the first 3 lines has been an accurate description of the passing days. Midterms are already coming durr.

backlog

I have a lot of cool stuff saved on my hard drive or instapaper for "the future" when I will "have time". Aka never. But it's such a shame to not revisit some of these things, so here's some attention that they deserve.

1. Douglas Hofstader articles from Scientific America (also old issues of the magazine I got from high school).
Seriously, I swear I'll read these one day. This one day was suppose to be sometime in the summer break that just passed. Never will I be as free as then "orz. This article (Presidential Lecture) by Hofstader I did read! I also tried reading GEB, but I don't get it. Hofstader too smart, there's an entire subreddit devoted to the book, as well as a MIT Openware courseware. Someone please commit to the course with me.

2. Lockhart's Lament.
I'm pretty sure I've posted or told some of you about this, but too lazy to check. A good read.
Bonus: very difficult math problems (lecture by David Hilbert).

3. What's Your Favourite Deep, Elegent, or Beautiful Explanation?
If quora is a book and had even better responses. ONE DAY, all of these books shall be read!

4. Classic literature
I miss summer because I miss having free reading time. It's embarassing how little of these titles I've read, though a good amount appeared on my reading list at some point in time. PEY year is when I catch up! Another list from Zen Habits

5. The Country of Blind- H.G.Wells
Funny how I got the idea of the post because I came across a H.G.Wells quotation. Not the one I posted before though, and wikiquote has different wording:
The past is but the beginning of a beginning, and all that is or has been is but the twilight of the dawn.
It also makes so much more sense in context, (the context sounds rather similar to the content of APS301). H.G. Wells reminds me of Vonnegut, like a british version that was affected by WWI instead of WWII (aka pretty awesome, gots to read his books too).

6. A lot of hotels to visit (hinthint Rui leggo).
Moral of the post: go through my instapaper and downloads folder more often.

I tried to do a one liner summary of my core courses:
  • Engineering Mathematics: approximate until the number is close enough.
  • Tech, Society, and the Biosphere: lack of context is killing us all!
  • Solid Mechanics: stress and its friends.
  • Fluid Mechanics: pressure and its friends.
  • Urban Engineering Ecology: let's start by doing a mass/energy balance.

I get the feeling that the majority of my posts during the school year will either be about school, or food, but probably both.

buckwheat

Not the best week (bad days tend to have positive feedback) but could be worse. It's just week 3 and has been a constant stream of work durr. Pretty sure I was still chilling at this time last year haha.

But shepheard's pie and chocolate tarte is a pretty good fix (y)
Also the ready-made food selection at Carlton St Loblaws is freaking amazing (non of the two are from Loblaws though).

I would really like to do nothing for the weekend, but problem sets, report and research for another report calls.

33 hours

This is a good summary of my day(s).

The schedule took way too long to make, which means there's some shortcut in ID that I'm not aware of. Can you create arrays of guidelines? *u* (or just repeat in the same direction at a set interval?)

Spent a lot of money since school year (eSPI why would you have an $100 registration fee? "orz) started and just committed to spending more (MOO sale and splitting Jetpens order with friend). Also sharing groceries with others is expensive too.
I want my income ;_;

mix

Somehow in this week of no tutorials, all free time seem to vanish somewhere. I blame cooking, takes so freakin long. It's a miracle that my mom can make 3 dishes in one hour, whereas I'm about 1/2-1/3 as efficient.

To illustrate why, here's fancy cold noodles. I shouldn't have such high standards for food now that I'm personally cooking, but habits die hard:


Second year isn't that bad so far, hours keep dropping as labs occur rarely, and some tutorials are out right being told by profs as optional. So maybe hovering around the mid-20s in terms of hours so far. Lots of assignments though, so another time sink.

Have lots of photos to use as catch-up/filler materials, but too lazy to open PS and resize them (actually takes less than 10mins). They'll be up eventually. Dragon.

All done fieldbook! The quality of work is debatable, but done is done (y). Man it's the first assignment and my attitude is already like this, will never get PEY at Arup at this rate gg.

But today is mostly a chill day, Dave took me out on birthday date. Watched The Mortal Instruments (Godfrey Gao as the warlock! hooooot) & dinner at Don Don Izakaya (impressive sake menu).

I feel like this is the equivalent of Hunger Games but supernatural, and maybe hotter guys. But then again I never watched Hunger Games so what do I know. I also think it would have been a much better plot if Valentine happened to be the good guy in the end. But then again I haven't read the books so maybe that is what happens (I hope). If only this was a Kaori Yuki manga (the sibling love is cutting a close).

Izakayas are like Japanese dim sum, but more expensive and is usually eaten for dinner.
Clockwise, honey plum shochu cocktail, seafood fried noodles, agedashi tofu (the sauce is good!), tako wasabi (really strong wasabi taste, would have been good with steamed rice), hokke with garlic butter (delicious!) and chirashi (my cheap way of eating sashimi).

Good day with the boyfriend, but then again so is pretty much everyday with him. I promise this is the cheesiest thing you'll see in a while.

Dinner from previous times


Left is cold noodles made long ago (the toppings make a difference!) and right is pad thai from Papaya at chestnut reunion. They have good portion sizes for how much you pay, I got two meals from that, and tasty too :)

ups and downs

Starting from yesterday afternoon,

Good: Tempt 9 taste delicious (and has pretty packaging, which is how Rui ended up buying it)
Bad: drinking it on an empty stomach led to immediate redness on my entire face, followed by being too dizzy to stand up. I've pretty much had equal amount of times of good and bad reactions to alcohol.
Good: seeing high school friends again at dinner and teasing Rui :D love youuu
Bad: sleeping late after waking up at 7 cause the twins picked a really early flight.
Good: cake for breakfast, cake for any meal is good (y)
Bad: cleaning. Needs no elaboration other than the fact that I swear this place has never been cleaned for years.
Good: Odo and Amy came over for SGS, fun times.
Bad: deciding to go for late night ayce kbbq. It's hard to appreciate the taste of meat when you've had way too much of it.

and finally,
Good: hearing the cheers of f!roshs as they wake around downtown. Second year leggo!

curd tart

More catching up via food photos (y)

Nabeyaki at Ema-Tei, one of the few Japanese restaurants with Japanese staff (and authentic food according to reviews).

It was really good, and comforting like a hotpot dish is suppose to be. Was on lunch special for $8.50 (normal price $13.50), which is a really good deal as you get a lot of seafood. Recommended!

I remember a line in The Devil Wears Prada that says something like the internship is the lowest pay highest perk job, which is kind of like the Sky Garden job. It's minimum wage, but you get a selection of the freshest produce and an amaaazing view.

There's quite a few varieties of pepper that we grow. This week was a bumper crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and beans (so pretty much everything). Was such a workout carrying them all to the food bank.

But nothing beats having a nice dinner with friends ;D One Hour has a wonderful atmosphere for that, they also never rush you out.

Thanks Janice/Nick/David for the delicious cake. They sorta got smushed on the way back, but all the more excuse to eat them all!
